The wife of Ilocano insurgent leader Diego Silang, Gabriela worked with her husband to overthrow the Spanish and establish an independent Ilocos.  They collaborated with the British and Diego was briefly appointed governor of Ilocos before his assassination in 1763.
For four months Gabriela led her troops against Spanish colonial forces.  Despite an early victory at Santa and Gabriela’s work to create an alliance with the Tinggian people, the rebels were defeated in September 1763.  Gabriela and 80 of her men were publicly hanged.
