The daughter of a circus performer, Shakuntala was a math prodigy, able to calculate large sums in her head from the age of three.  She toured the world as a “human calculator” and made her way into the Guinness Book of Records for her speedy computations.
Shakuntala wrote several books on mathematics, as well as the first study of homosexuality in India in 1977.  Previously married to a guy man, Shakuntala interviewed a range of people for her book and called for greater acceptance of homosexuality.  
Shakuntala died on April 21, 2013 at the age of 83.
